• Google base feed: Google Base extends RSS feeds. (Only common tags are supported.)
• RSS sitemap feed: RSS feed files use XML and often used for blog and forum websites.
• ROR sitemap feed: ROR sitemaps extends RSS feeds with more information.
• ASP.net web sitemap: ASP.Net website navigation and menu controls use Web.sitemap files.
• Text sitemap: Sitemap URL list format used by some search engines, e.g. Google and Yahoo.

Advanced Features

• Filter: You can use different filters for crawling and another set of filters for output/sitemap
• Priority: Can calculate priorities based on internal linking much the same way Google calculates PageRank
• Big Websites: With a little configuration tinkering, you should have no problems reaching half million+ URLs.
• Scheduling: Includes rich command line interface making it possible to schedule etc. your scans, upload, pings etc
• Protected area: Can perform website login of *most* sites (personally I think this is only of limited value, but some like it for HTML sitemaps.)
• Sitemaps: Can create image, video (you have to host them on own domain), news, code, mobile you name it sitemaps etc.
• Flash: There’s also some support for Flash if you want to configure A1SG for it.

The protocol in a nutshell is as follows:

• An feed URL (a “topic”) declares its Hub server(s) in its Atom or RSS XML file, via <link rel=”hub” …>. The hub(s) can be run by the publisher of the feed, or can be a community hub that anybody can use. (Atom and RssFeeds are supported)

• A subscriber (a server that’s interested in a topic), initially fetches the Atom URL as normal. If the Atom file declares its hubs, the subscriber can then avoid lame, repeated polling of the URL and can instead register with the feed’s hub(s) and subscribe to updates.

• The subscriber subscribes to the Topic URL from the Topic URL’s declared Hub(s).

• When the Publisher next updates the Topic URL, the publisher software pings the Hub(s) saying that there’s an update.

• The hub efficiently fetches the published feed and multicasts the new/changed content out to all registered subscribers.

The protocol is decentralized and free. No company is at the center of this controlling it. Anybody can run a hub, or anybody can ping (publish) or subscribe using open hubs.

To bootstrap this, we’ve provided an open source reference implementation of the hub (the hard part of the protocol) that runs on Google App Engine, and is open for anybody to use.

What is so special about it?

Metadata in and of itself is not too interesting. Where things get more interesting is what you can do with it. For right now we’ll just provide a few examples of what publishers are doing and planning to do:

Tag your complete historical archives in hours

Perhaps you’re a complete convert to the value of tagging your content and are doing a great job with new material. But what about the tens of thousands to millions of pieces of historical content you have already produced? Several organizations are in the process of feeding their entire historical archives through Calais and automatically generating high-quality tags and metadata. Doing so, they translate a stale content asset into one that can be actively searched and integrated with other content assets.

As a simple example, your users can now search for “IBM” and “Management Change” to receive a complete listing of IBM-related hirings, firings, promotions, transfers and new positions – something barely achievable with keyword-based search.

If you syndicate your content to others, you can now offer syndication options based on the highly accurate information contained within your metadata. For example, a business-related feed limited to acquisitions and management changes can be automatically generated.

Remember that new pages usually take one week or more to get indexed by search engines, so that by the time your single post page gets indexed the post will already be out of the homepage, and it will be displayed as an excerpt, removing the duplicate content issue.
